Advancements in autonomous vehicle safety: a new motion planning and control framework addressing SOTIF challenges | Newswise
Autonomous vehicles (AVs) are increasingly vital to smart transportation systems, promising improvements in safety, energy efficiency, and traffic management. As these vehicles incorporate more sophisticated features, ensuring their operational safety becomes crucial for the automotive industry. Despite progress, several tragic incidents involving AVs highlight the urgent need to enhance safety measures. These incidents primarily stem from three safety concerns: functional safety (ISO 26262), safety of the intended functionality (SOTIF, ISO 21448), and cybersecurity (ISO 21434). Among these, SOTIF remains a key focus in research and a pressing challenge for AV deployment. SOTIF addresses potential hazards arising from system limitations, performance gaps, and environmental factors, including weather conditions and electromagnetic interference.
A recent study published in Engineering introduces a novel framework titled "Safe Motion Planning and Control Framework for Automated Vehicles with Zonotopic TRMPC." The research identifies that existing motion plann...
