Jackson officer injured in gunfire exchange as residents voice concerns over violence

An investigation is ongoing after a Jackson police officer was injured in a gunfire exchange with a suspect.

According to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, the officer was in the 1000 block of Raymond Road when he heard multiple gunshots and saw someone running with a weapon. The officer instructed the individual to drop the weapon, leading to an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and the officer.

The suspect sustained minor injuries and was taken into custody.

"People who have disrespect for human life, there is no discipline involved. I don't know where we are failing our young people [so that] they think it is okay to take a shot at a person who is there to protect them," said Mark Calhoun, a Jackson resident.

Authorities are still investigating the incident and have asked anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. The identity of the suspect has not yet been released.
