Jared Hollins wins first career start as Jags run their way 41-36 win over Ohio

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - With quarterback Bishop Davenport dealing with a minor injury from last week, South Alabama turned to Jared Hollins who made his first career start and he made the most of it as Hollins and the Jags running game carried them to a much-needed win.

Hollins made his first career start against Ohio just like Davenport did two years ago. He looked comfortable on the opening drive. Hollins started the game 2/3 for 57 yards and set up a 6-yard touchdown run to put south on the board.

On their next drive Hollins showed off his ability to extend plays as he escaped the rush on 4th and 2. Hollins bought some time and got it to a wide-open Rod Gibbs for a 34-yard touchdown.

“I was a little nervous what Coach Applewhite would say about that one but just tried to keep my eyes downfield and make a play for the team,” said Jared Hollins.

“We always talk about how do you end the play with the ball and we’ll laugh about that one in the quarterback room because it was a great play and sometimes you need players to make great plays,” said head coach Major Applewhite.
