The Jasper City Council authorized emergency funding for a Jasper Police Department server replacement Tuesday, Sept. 15, as well as approving a Jasper Main Street tree-planting project and scheduling a hearing on an economic assistance request from Young Jewelers.
Council members approved an emergency budget amendment of approximately $130,000 to replace one of the JPD’s main servers.
The replacement was discussed during Monday’s work session, when Gates said the police department had room within its current budget to accommodate the expense, as the server is critical infrastructure for the department and needs to be replaced immediately.
Due to the urgency of the matter, the council suspended its rules and approved the amendment by unanimous consent. The action allows the department to move forward with the purchase without waiting for a later budget process.
The council also authorized Jasper Main Street to plant trees along city rights of way using grant funds. The effort intends to improve the appearance of several public areas while adding shade and replacing trees that have died in recent years.
