LANSING — Republican lieutenant governor candidate Jay DeBoyer said at an event over the weekend that he didn't know whether his running mate, gubernatorial nominee John James , had a position on a data center moratorium, according to a recording obtained by The Detroit News.
The Sept. 19 comments raised new questions about James' data center stance as public resistance to the projects has become one of the key themes of the 2026 campaign. Democratic candidate for governor Jocelyn Benson of Detroit and Republican U.S. Senate hopeful Mike Rogers of White Lake Township have both endorsed a temporary pause on new data centers.
DeBoyer, a state representative from Clay Township, was asked about a moratorium during a so-called "super Saturday" gathering with the Saginaw County Republican Party on Sept. 19.
Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement "I don't know that I have a position or John necessarily has a position specifically on the actual word of 'moratorium,'" DeBoyer said, according to the audio recording.
DeBoyer then added, "But I can tell you what the position is. The position is that it should first always, and always, be a local control issue."
