On a recent trip to Starlight, in search of a nice country style chicken dinner at Joe Huber’s Family Farm and Restaurant, I stopped by a field of pumpkins waiting to be harvested. To me, seeing pumpkins laying in a field is a real feeling of Southern Indiana Autumn nostalgia. As I strolled around the fields I came upon an apple orchard, another fruit almost ready for the harvest. The apples brought another picture to my mind--a bearded man walking across the fields of Indiana wearing a pot on his head and a coffee sack for a shirt. That strange character most all of us learned about in elementary school, Johnny Appleseed, who traveled around on foot and planted apple trees wherever he went.
Who was this man? Was he a tall tale like Paul Bunyan and John Henry or was he an actual person like Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett? I decided to find out.
