London artist Joy Crookes today shares her new single ‘Painkiller’ featuring Denzel Curry.
Produced by Dweller and Crookes, ‘Painkiller’ intermixes ’90s hip-hop cues and sweeping, string-laden classic soul notes.
The number memorializes Crookes’ past relationship, moving between disillusionment and tearstained regret, with the Carol City, Miami rapper bringing a toned-down affectation to proceedings.
Speaking about the track, Crookes says:
“I wrote Painkiller years ago after the end of a destructive relationship. It’s a conversational tune where I go through the motions of why I dated such a gobshite. alas, at least I got a nice tune out of it.”
‘Painkiller’ follows recent release ‘Feet Don’t Fail Me Now Part 2’ featuring Ravyn Lenae, and last year’s album ‘Juniper’, which featured collaborations with Vince Staples and Kano.
The new single arrives with a lived-in visual directed by Ethan and Tom. It was filmed over two days in Chicago while Joy was on the road supporting Lewis Capaldi on his US tour.
