KEY COLONY BEACH — Key Colony Beach commissioners on Oct. 22 approved a $1.283 million contract with the city of Marathon for fiscal year 2026-2027 fire and emergency medical services and greenlit a sailfish statue with a fountain for City Hall Garden, while staff said the new hall is on track to finish in November.
Commissioners also approved purchasing wastewater system membranes for $118,760, with services by Veolia, on the utility board’s recommendation.
Monroe County Tourist Development Council project funds and the city budget were discussed, followed by committee reports. A reminder reiterated that city ordinances prohibit vacation rentals of fewer than seven days.
Marathon Fire Rescue’s Division Chief Jesse Bossum said crews responded to 12 calls last month in Key Colony Beach: three public assists, two false alarms and seven medical emergencies.
During public comment, Barbara Haag-Heitman urged more avenues for resident input.
“Citizens feel like they don’t have a voice, so it’s caused a commotion around the gazebo, around the fish cleaning station … and for some people, there’s some unrest. … So, I’m just looking for more citizens’ voices.”
