HURON — Eighth-grader Jack Gillen topped the leaderboards to claim individual medalist honors at the Eastern South Dakota Conference middle school meet on Tuesday at Broadland Creek Golf Course.
Gillen finished with an even-par 72, including a 1-under 35 front nine, coming in six strokes ahead of the field of 49 golfers. For the round, he made three birdies, tying for the tournament lead, and three bogeys, with a tournament-best 12 pars. Gillen also took seventh at the ESD junior varsity tournament earlier this month at Lakeview Golf Course.

As a team, Mitchell landed in fourth place with 356 strokes. Yankton won the team title at 329 strokes, followed by Brandon Valley (336) and Brookings (343). Behind Mitchell, Watertown (358) rounded out the top five.
Elsewhere for Mitchell, Graeme Polreis (84) was eighth individually, and Boston Bates (89) was 14th. Mason Fortin (111) was the fourth and final score to factor into the team scorecard. Joseph Sebert (117) and Griffin Lyle were also on the course for the Kernels, though Lyle was disqualified and did not post a score.
