Kootenai County gets federal World War II heritage designation | Spokane News | khq.com

WASHINGTON — The National Park Service announced on October 16, 2026, that Kootenai County was one of 10 places selected for its 2026 American World War II Heritage Cities program.

A National Park Service news release said Kootenai County was recognized for its World War II role, including training large numbers of sailors at Farragut Naval Training Station. The release also said the area backed the war effort through military aviation, hospital work and jobs tied to wartime needs.

Jessica Bowron said the designation recognized communities for their wartime contributions and continued preservation efforts.

“These designations highlight the enduring legacy of service, sacrifice, innovation and industrial achievement that helped establish the United States as the “Arsenal of Democracy” and continue to shape our national story,” said Jessica Bowron, Comptroller Exercising the Delegated Authority of the Director of the National Park Service.

The program allows only one city or local jurisdiction in each state or territory to receive the honorary designation. The National Park Service said 46 states and two territories have been designated since 2020.
