The cost to go to the landfill will likely increase with the new year. Asotin County Commissioners held a public hearing today during their weekly meeting. No one showed up to comment in-person or over the Zoom broadcast. The price for dumping less than 200 lbs right now is $5.00, but with the proposed increase it will rise to either $6.40 or $7.00. The idea of $7.00 is just so customers don’t have to carry around coins, and the landfill doesn’t also have to keep a considerable amount of change on-hand for people using cash. Public Works Director Josh Malkin commented on the reason for the increase.
“Solid Waste is very highly regulated, and getting even more highly-regulated by the year through the state, the EPA, health districts, and everything else. It’s not going to get cheaper to run our landfill.”
If the price hike goes through, it will also cost more for Sunshine Disposal in Lewiston, Naslund in Asotin County, the City of Clarkston, and all collection companies who take their waste to the Asotin County Landfill.
