In a significant move that could mean the difference between life and death, a new bill championed by a Port St. Joe legislator emphasizes the importance of cardiac screenings for high school athletes. Rep. Jason Shoaf's "Second Chance Act" (HB 1135) requires all high school student-athletes to undergo comprehensive physical exams, including electrocardiograms (ECGs).
The bill was inspired by the tragic death of local football star Chance Gainer, who collapsed during a game against Liberty County last year and subsequently passed away at the hospital. His passing, despite his previous athletic achievements, prompted action to prevent similar tragedies.

Iva Rae Williams, a cousin of Gainer and a talented athlete in softball, soccer, and volleyball, showed abnormal cardiac signs during screening.
