LeRoy Neiman's Fashion Sketches Highlighted in Kent State University Museum Exhibition
The Kent State University Museum is set to showcase a collection of LeRoy Neiman's early fashion illustrations, emphasizing a lesser-known aspect of the artist's prolific career. Supported by the LeRoy Neiman and Janet Byrne Neiman Foundation, the exhibition titled "LeRoy Neiman: A Keen Observer of Style" will open on October 31 in Kent, Ohio. It features 85 of Neiman's sketches and illustrations from the 1950s to the 1990s, exploring how his background in fashion design influenced his dynamic portrayal of clothing, gestures, and style.
Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, Neiman demonstrated artistic talent early on, selling posters and tattooing classmates to earn money. During his military service, he worked as a cook, painted set designs for Red Cross events, and created murals. After studying at the St. Paul School of Art and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago through the G.I. Bill, he began his professional journey in fashion illustration at Carson Pirie Scott.
