To the editor: The recent cybersecurity incident affecting Springfield Public Schools should serve as an urgent wake-up call across the commonwealth.
Having spent my career working in information technology, I know firsthand the immense disruption, financial cost and operational strain these attacks inflict on an organization and its staff. My thoughts are with Springfield’s technical team as they navigate that recovery.
School districts are increasingly prime targets for sophisticated cyberthreats because they house sensitive student data, personnel records and critical infrastructure needed to keep classrooms running. For Pittsfield, the situation in Springfield shouldn’t just be a cautionary headline — it should prompt proactive local oversight.
Our community needs assurance that Pittsfield Public Schools is prepared for a similar event. That means maintaining verified, off-site data backups to ensure rapid recovery, establishing clear incident-response protocols, and considering an independent third-party security audit to identify gaps before bad actors do.
