To the Editor:
Was our mayor fairly elected? Some members of our city council think our mayor and a council member were unfairly elected even though they received the most votes. They say it should take 50% of the vote to be elected. Davison County has always used the plurality system of voting — meaning the most votes wins — as far back as 1903, well over 100 years.

Every city in South Dakota uses the plurality system except Sioux Falls and Rapid City. Even our school board and county commissioners are elected using the plurality system.
Our Republican primary for governor, the U.S. Senate and U.S. House races only need 35% of the vote to win.
So why are our council members voting to change the rules and make it 50% of the vote to win?
It all started when they lost the term limits vote. Now they want to use the 50% rule so they can manipulate the vote to keep as much power as they can.
One of the council members said having the 50% rule is a good thing. No, it’s not.
If it were, every city in South Dakota would use it, along with the Republican primary for governor, U.S. Senate and U.S. house races.
