A magnitude 3.0 earthquake was detected in New Jersey on Saturday night, with residents in nearby areas and New York City reporting that they experienced the tremor. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) identified Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey, as the earthquake's epicenter, which occurred around 10:18 p.m.
According to USGS findings, the quake resulted from fault activity at shallow crustal depths. Notably, in April 2024, a larger magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck near Tewksbury, New Jersey. Although the August 3, 2025, event was not an aftershock of the April quake, it was felt across the northeastern U.S. due to efficient seismic wave propagation.
While earthquakes of this size are relatively small globally, eastern U.S. residents often feel them more prominently. The recent quake took place in an area with known faults that could be reactivated at any time. Since 1950, there have been 43 earthquakes of magnitude 3 or greater within 250 km of this location, with the April 2024 event being the largest.
Many in New Jersey and New York City described experiencing a brief, intense jolt and shaking. Social media and neighborhood conversations were filled with concerns, with some fearin...
