A political newcomer is challenging a freshman legislator in the Rutland-8 District.
Republican Alicia Malay, of Pittsford, is seeking a second term in the Vermont House of Representatives. Running against her is Democrat Genevieve Duchesneau, of Proctor.

Duchesneau, 28, is a software developer. This is her first experience running for public office.
“I want to do something to try to give back to the world around me, use my background in software and technology,” she said. “I was one of the people developing AI to help the world ... I see a lot of what’s coming down the pipeline. I think we need to have some actual legislation with teeth against things like large-scale data centers, surveillance systems and general tracking of our populations.”
Duchesneau said she would like to see a movement toward universal healthcare.
“I know we tried and did not succeed in 2011,” she said. “There might be a regional solution with the Northeast.”
Duchesneau said the school system is “top heavy” but that solving healthcare would do wonders for education expenses. She said she does not see closing small-town schools as a viable long-term solution.
