Recently, I received news from MAN of the SEA brand owner, Don Weismantel, that he’d just completed an exciting project with rocker Mandy Lion. The collaboration was facilitated by music artist manager David Arden, who has represented bands such as Air Supply, Black Sabbath, ELO and Wizard. Mandy had expressed an interest in becoming a brand ambassador for the MAN of the SEA. Presumably he’d seen the publicity about “Lucky Jack”, the incredible watch made for Russell Crowe and admired the craftsmanship. After several conversations, ‘Peg Leg Don’ created a wonderful timepiece called “King of the Sea”
It’s always inspiring to hear of micro brands getting recognition for their work in an industry dominated by large groups. I first became aware of MAN of the SEA on a bronze watch forum and instantly knew they were special. Don Weismantel goes to extraordinary lengths to create very ornate cases with meticulous detail. This, I believe, separates him from the masses. As Mandy Lion is a showman, it was only fitting that the “King of the Sea” custom watch has a bold aesthetic, and Don has definitely delivered on that front.
