LOWELL — The state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education released the 2026 school and district Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System results and accountability designation, and once again, Lowell Public Schools improved on previous results in several categories.
“It’s a moderate improvement, but still an improvement over last year,” Superintendent of Schools Liam Skinner said. “It’s very pleasing. Our schools are doing very well.”
He spoke by phone Monday prior to a webinar hosted by DESE on the MCAS results that were embargoed until Tuesday.
Last year, LPS’s cumulative target was 50% . This year, it was 56%. The cumulative target is a metric used by DESE to evaluate how well the district is progressing toward its state-assigned improvement goals.
DESE said the district earned an overall classification of “not requiring assistance or intervention,” which has a range from 50-74%. School districts meeting or exceeding targets have a cumulative target percentage of 75% or higher.
