Mayville State releases statement on quarterback’s condition after brain injury
School says Matt Donovan remains in medically induced coma following surgery in Fargo
MAYVILLE, N.D. (Valley News Live) - Mayville State released a statement Sunday on the condition of quarterback Matt Donovan, who sustained a head injury during Saturday’s football game against Simpson University.
According to the school’s statement, Donovan sustained the injury in the third quarter and was life-flighted to Fargo. Mayville State’s play-by-play stats from the game show Donovan’s final play came on a rush to start the third quarter, with Axel Anderson entering at quarterback afterward. Mayville State won the game 42-41.
Once Donovan arrived in Fargo, he underwent brain surgery that lasted just over two hours, during which portions of his skull were removed to relieve pressure on his brain, the school said.
“For context, the pressure in the average person’s brain is a 4, his was may times more than that,” the statement said.
After leaving surgery, Donovan was released into the intensive care unit, according to the school.
“He is under some of the best medical care in the midwest,” the statement said.
