Meredith celebrated Old Home Day on Saturday by burying a time capsule containing items — including a roll of pennies.
The U.S. Mint halted the manufacture of pennies in 2025 because the cost of making them exceeded their face value.
Although there are stillmany of them around, pennies have been gradually going out of circulation, which 50 years from now might make them truly rare.
The pennies and other contents of the time capsule were placed in a steel canister that was then buried in the southwest corner of Community Park, a pocket park in the downtown on Main Street.
Chris Kelly, who chaired the time capsule committee, said the goal was to fill the capsule, which is slated to be opened on July 4, 2076, with “some of the things that were going on in 2026.”
The capsule does not contain any mention of the divisive politics of this year, because “we’re about bringing people together,” Kelly said.
The capsule also contains several items from America’s 250th birthday celebration this year. Among them were flags, buttons and a T-shirt.
