At the start of this semester, Trinity University increased the minimum wage for student workers from $7.50 an hour to $10 an hour. Along with the pay increase, however, some on-campus jobs have reduced the maximum number of hours students can work because of budget restrictions.
Natalie Walper, acting chief human resources officer, explained that the decision to increase student wages was meant to encourage students to continue working on campus rather than finding jobs elsewhere.
“The increase in the minimum wage reflects the university’s continued investment in student employment. On-campus jobs connect the work being performed more intentionally to student learning, professional development and career readiness,” Walper said.
Despite the minimum wage increase, some students still have taken off-campus jobs. Risa Flores, senior human resources major, employee at the library circulation desk and assistant for Trinity Choir, said that even though she is being paid above the minimum wage, she still works an off-campus job and is currently searching for a fourth job.
