MITCHELL — City leaders will consider whether to collect the full allowable tax revenue for next year.
The Mitchell City Council, during its regular meeting on Monday, Sept. 21, will have a budget discussion starting at 5:30 p.m., followed by regular business at 6 p.m. The council will consider, among other things, a resolution to levy a special assessment of $7.2 million for submission to the Davison County auditor’s office. The city has until Oct. 1 to certify the tax request.

The council is considering raising a tax levy of $7.37 million for 2027, an increase of $328,857 over the 2026 tax levy. The levy would be $4.172 per $1,000 of taxable value. Mitchell’s total taxable valuation is about $1.76 billion. Property tax accounts for 31% of the city's revenue.
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) directly caps the maximum annual revenue increase a municipality can collect from existing properties. This year’s CPI is 2.5% of 2026’s total levy at $176,047. Mitchell’s property-tax growth factor is 2.17%, allowing the city to collect an additional $152,809 in 2027. County and school levies are separate.
