National Voter Registration Day occurred on Tuesday, Sept. 15. At the Magic Stones, nine different on- and off-campus organizations came to assist Trinity University students with their voting needs. This included registering students to vote, helping them change their voting addresses to Bexar County, as well as providing general assistance with any voting-related questions.
The event took place amid controversy regarding President Donald Trump’s recent attempts at restricting mail-in ballots. In March 2026, Trump issued an executive order attempting to restrict the availability of mail-in ballots, arguing that they create opportunities for fraud. The Supreme Court struck down this order in August 2026; however, many young voters were impacted by the threat to voting.
According to John Hermann, associate political science professor, Trump has been pushing for the restriction of mail-in ballots since his first campaign in 2016. He says that even though the Supreme Court has ruled his executive order unconstitutional, Trump will likely seek out a loophole, or an alternative statute to target.
