Nebraska rancher gains insight into global beef demand through Guatemala trip
Steve Hanson from Elsie, Nebraska, experienced firsthand the significance of Latin American markets for U.S. beef exports during a recent visit to Guatemala. Traveling with the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF), Hanson attended the Latin America Product Showcase, an event that has seen growing participation and influence.
"The event attracted nearly 500 attendees, marking a substantial increase and underscoring its growing importance," Hanson remarked. During his visit, he observed the local meat market and noted that Guatemala imports approximately 90% of its beef and half of its pork from the United States, highlighting the crucial role of American meat in the region.
Hanson also toured a major retail outlet, where about a quarter of consumers shop, as well as a high-end butcher shop, emphasizing the high quality and safety standards of American meat products that appeal to diverse consumer segments.
