Newton High School closed Wednesday due to power outage

NEWTON, Kan. (KWCH) - The Newton school district confirmed the high school will be closed Wednesday because of a power outage.

The district clarified that the outage affected only the high school, and other schools in the district are in session on Wednesday.

As of early Wednesday morning, the district hadn’t confirmed the source of the outage, but the disruption followed storms on Tuesday night that included heavy rain and strong winds.

Addressing what Newton experienced Tuesday night, Newton Fire/EMS reported that lightning struck a home at about 11 p.m., causing a small fire and damaging parts of the home. There were no injuries reported on the call.

“A reminder that even when a storm passes quickly, lightning can cause damage to homes and property,” Newton Fire/EMS advised in a post on its Facebook page.

Storm Team 12 reported that scattered showers and storms, continuing through the early morning Wednesday, will likely be on and off throughout the day.
