New York City Opens First Shelter Exclusively for Transgender and Gender-Nonconforming Individuals
A pioneering shelter exclusively funded by the city for transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals experiencing homelessness has opened its doors in New York City. According to Gothamist, this facility marks the first of its kind nationwide.
Location and Capacity
Situated in Long Island City, Queens, the shelter is operated by Destination Tomorrow, a nonprofit organization based in the Bronx that focuses on LGBTQ+ issues. Named Ace’s Place in memory of Sean Ebony Coleman’s late mother—whose nickname was Ace—the shelter can accommodate up to 150 residents, significantly expanding the city's capacity to support trans and gender-diverse populations.
Legal Mandates and Funding
Currently, New York City is mandated to provide at least 30 shelter beds for transgender individuals, housing them in accordance with their gender identity—a requirement stemming from a legal settlement. The operation of Ace's Place is projected to cost $65 million through 2030.
