Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has raised alarms about a looming crisis in artificial intelligence that could threaten safety and security. Speaking at a Federal Reserve conference in Washington, D.C., he cautioned regulators and banking leaders about emerging AI-driven fraud tactics that may soon become widespread.
Challenges Posed by Modern AI
Altman highlighted that modern AI can convincingly replicate voices using minimal audio samples, posing significant challenges for current authentication systems like voice prints. He criticized the continued reliance on voice biometrics in financial institutions such as HSBC and Wells Fargo, noting that AI-generated voice clones can easily bypass these protections.
Recent Examples of AI-Driven Fraud
Recent cases demonstrate the severity of this threat. In 2016, a BBC reporter's HSBC account was accessed using his twin brother’s voice.
