Orange County Waste & Recycling (OCWR) is organizing a complimentary marine flare collection event for boat owners and local residents. The drive-through operation will take place from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 16, at the Dana Point Harbor, located at 24650 Dana Point. Since unexploded or expired flares are classified as explosives, they require specialized handling for disposal. Participants are advised to transport their expired flares securely in their vehicle trunks, where staff will collect items directly from the vehicle for safe removal. A designated walk-up area will also be available.
Tom Koutroulis, director of OC Waste & Recycling, emphasized the importance of proper disposal: "Proper disposal of expired marine flares prevents hazardous waste from contaminating landfills and waterways, thereby protecting our delicate coastal environments." He added, "Marine flares are intended solely for emergency use, and responsible disposal helps prevent potential environmental hazards."
