For many, Mondays are associated with the stress of the coming school or work week, but for some Trinity University students, Mondays are an opportunity to step away from it all. Every Monday from 4 to 5 p.m, students come together in the Margarite B. Parker Chapel meditation garden for Mindful Meditation, a group focused on providing a space for relaxation and reflection.
The group was originally founded by Malcolm Fox, alumnus ‘20, in his sophomore year as a place to practice Buddhist meditation. After his graduation, it was facilitated by now-retired Trinity professor Richard Reed before being taken over by Sarah Pinnock, professor of contemporary religious thought.
Pinnock said her own meditation practices are important to her so she got involved for the chance to help create a space where all students, of any or no religious background, could find the time to meditate. Pinnock guides the students through three primary practices: first, 15 minutes of silent sitting. Second, 10 minutes of silent walking in the chapel’s meditation garden. The silent walking is co-led by Kruba Chris, a Buddhist monk Pinnock knows through the San Antonio Zen Center.
