Poland Extends Border Checks with Germany and Lithuania Amid Migration Concerns
Poland has announced the extension of its border control measures with Germany and Lithuania until October 4, citing ongoing concerns over irregular migration. After a high-level security meeting involving regional officials and border authorities, Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski confirmed that the updated regulations have been formally submitted to the European Commission.
Kierwinski explained that increased pressure along Poland's eastern border, where efforts to curb migration through Belarus and Russia have been implemented, has led to migration rerouting toward other parts of the European Union. "Our barrier is 98% effective, which means that Belarusian and Russian services, along with illegal migrants, are shifting to different regions," he noted.
He emphasized that a key priority for Poland and its EU partners is to block routes into Lithuania and Latvia, pointing to ongoing security challenges.
