Poland Extends Border Controls with Germany and Lithuania Amid Migration Concerns
In response to ongoing migration challenges, Poland has announced the extension of its temporary border checks with Germany and Lithuania until October 4. Following high-level security discussions involving regional officials and border authorities, Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski confirmed that the relevant regulations have been submitted to the European Commission for formal approval.
Minister Kierwinski explained that increased pressure on Poland's eastern borders has resulted from efforts to curb migration routes through Belarus and Russia, which have led to migrant flows being redirected toward other EU nations. He stated, "Our barriers are 98% effective, but migration activities by Belarusian and Russian agencies are shifting to different regions."
He emphasized that a primary goal for Poland and its EU partners is to effectively block migration pathways to Lithuania and Latvia. Poland had reinstated border controls within the Schengen zone last year due to security and migration threats, and this latest extension will keep those measures in place for an additional two months.
