One Downtown Austin high-rise is still dealing with a power outage following an electrical fire that happened Sept. 17.
About 100 people evacuated from The Bowie apartments, which is located at 311 Bowie St., sometime before midnight last Thursday after crews located a small fire in a hallway utility room, officials with the Austin Fire Department (AFD) said.
According to the Bowie Tenants Union, which represents tenants at the complex and is not affiliated with its management, the fire allegedly started from a "plugged-in, powered-on refrigerator inside the electrical closet." The union claims the complex "has been swapping out fridges in several units" and using the electrical closet as storage space for extra fridges.
Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement After the fire was extinguished, those residents were reportedly able to return to their units. The Bowie Tenants Union said the high-rise complex has been without power since the fire, which is estimated to be restored Sept. 29.
