Rowan County officials are hoping a grant incentive totaling $717,932 will attract a major business considering East Spencer as its new location.

At their Monday evening regular session, Rowan County commissioners approved a grant incentive request for Project Tribe. Project Tribe is the codename for a currently unnamed company considering Rowan County as the home for a new manufacturing plant.

“You know how we love manufacturing in Rowan County,” said Economic Development Council Vice President Scott Shelton. “We’re trying to bring more of it here.”

The grant incentive is one of a handful of ways Rowan County attracts large companies that have expressed interest. It’s referred to as the Rowan County Investment Grant Program.

“The Rowan County Investment Grant Program is intended to provide an inducement for new businesses to locate in these communities, as well as to encourage existing business to expand,” reads a portion of the EDC’s description of the county’s policy.
