PUTNAM COUNTY- Despite higher prices at the pump, back-to-school shopping, and new car purchases, Putnam’s sales tax revenue declined during August.
The Putnam Legislature’s Audit Committee received the news at Tuesday evening’s meeting that $7 million had been collected in sales tax receipts for the 31-day period, down from $7.7 million collected in August 2025.
For the first eight months of the year, the county has collected $59.2 million in sales tax dollars and is $3.9 million ahead of last year’s total.
The 2026 sales tax calendar has been topsy-Turvey for county coffers with declines year-over-year reported in January, February, April, and August and increases in March, May, June, and July.
Putnam will now be distributing a part of the sales tax to its nine municipalities.
Carmel’s share for August totals $406,414 followed by $156,146 for Kent; $139,696 for Patterson; $87,405 for Philipstown; $142,371 for Putnam Valley and $188,222 for Southeast.
Putnam’s three villages also received added revenue: $30,358 for Brewster; $24,039 for Cold Spring and $7,553 for Nelsonville.
