Cajuns control football for 21 minutes in second half, win on Sterner’s kick
LAFAYETTE – Tony Sterner drilled a 37-yard field goal as time expired Saturday night, lifting the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Football team to a 23-20 victory over Arkansas State in its Sun Belt Conference opener and Homecoming contest at Our Lady of Lourdes Stadium.
Sterner connected on all three field goal attempts, including two in the final six minutes, as the Ragin’ Cajuns improved to 4-1 overall and opened 1-0 in Sun Belt play before 21,211 fans.
Louisiana piled up 251 rushing yards and outgained the Red Wolves 435-293, finishing with a 26-16 advantage in first downs. The Ragin’ Cajuns scored on all four second-half possessions, controlling the ball for over 21 minutes after halftime to limit ASU to only 92 yards of offense after the break.
After Sterner’s 25-yard field goal tied the game at 20-all with 5:38 remaining, Brent Gordon Jr. and Micah Johnson combined to stop Chauncy Cobb for a 2-yard loss on third down, forcing Arkansas State (2-3, 0-1 SBC) to punt.
