COAL CITY — Smoke from an active fire inside an old railroad tunnel closed three Raleigh County schools Monday as emergency crews worked to contain the uncontrollable blaze.
Coal City Elementary, Independence Middle and Independence High schools were closed Sept. 14 because of smoky conditions around Independence Hill after a fire began burning inside the Old Sophia Train Tunnel near Farley Hill over the weekend.
