Rarick beat Democratic-Farmer-Labor candidate Mary Carlson, a member of the Carlton-Wrenshall School Board, and Forward Independence Party candidate Monique Doward, a former Kettle River city councilor. Carlson had 42% of the vote and had conceded the vote. Doward had 2%.
The district encompasses all of Carlton and Pine counties, as well as portions of Chisago, Kanabec and St. Louis counties.
Rarick has represented the district since a special election in 2019. In his last race in 2022, he defeated his DFL challenger by nearly a 22% margin. He was first elected in 2014 to the Minnesota House of Representatives.
An electrician by trade who lives on a farm outside of Pine City, Rarick previously told the Pine Journal he would channel his energy into combating fraud, and expanding the state's energy portfolio.
He said he wants to reform how school districts are funded, noting large formulaic disparities and unfunded state mandates.
