ROSE HILL, Kan. (KAKE) - Police in Rose Hill are warning the community about the dangers of trespassing on railways after children were caught on camera climbing on and around a stopped train.
It’s Rail Safety Week and officers and advocates in Rose Hill spent the afternoon stopping drivers and handing out informational brochures and keychains reminding the community to always be train aware.
“People don’t realize that railroad property is private property and where we’ve seen more people are injured or killed due to trespassing incidents than grade crossing crashes with vehicles,” said Captain Matt Vogt, with the Valley Center police department and Operation Lifesaver.
Vogt is passionate about keeping people safe by informing them about the dangers of playing around train tracks.
Last week in Rose Hill, police say about six children were caught climbing on and around a train stopped for 45 minutes in the middle of town. One child was caught on camera carrying a bicycle, weaving between coupling stations.
