Rough surf, high tides lead to beach closures in Brevard County
High tide and rough surf have been beating up Brevard beaches for the last two days.
But for a certain crowd, this is their favorite time of the year.
“Just like Disneyland,” Brad Lee said. “It’s like a playground for me, but it could be someone else’s worst nightmare.”
At Jetty Park, officials closed the fishing pier Tuesday due to safety concerns.
In Satellite Beach, you couldn’t even access the beach. There were several closures in place as waves breached some dunes.
Brevard County Ocean Rescue said the conditions are dangerous and unpredictable.
It all stems from the King Tide cycle. It’s associated with the alignment of the sun, moon and Earth and can cause strong winds and coastal flooding, even if it’s not storming outside.
“It’s definitely not for the faint of heart,” Lee said.
The Cocoa Beach Fire Department was out on the beaches Monday, checking dune crossovers. The department is asking people to stay out of the water until conditions improve.
