Caregiver Health Disparities Highlighted in Recent Study
According to a recent analysis published by Medscape on August 7, 2025, caregivers residing in rural regions tend to experience poorer overall and physical health compared to those in urban areas. Additionally, rural caregivers are more prone to engage in unhealthy behaviors such as smoking and are more likely to be obese.
Study Overview and Methodology
The study examined data from a cross-sectional survey focusing on sociodemographic factors, caregiving experiences, and health outcomes among caregivers in different settings. Participants were identified as unpaid caregivers if they provided regular assistance to a friend or family member with health issues or disabilities within the past month.
Defining Rurality
Rurality was determined based on the 2013 Urban-Rural Classification Scheme. Caregivers living in micropolitan or noncore counties were categorized as residing in rural areas, while those in metropolitan counties were classified as urban.
