In the late 1980s, a movement started that continues to help shape the local economy as shoppers habits have evolved and businesses have pivoted to better meet the needs of customers.
Rutherford Town Rising, a nonprofit organization was launched to not only protect the historic buildings in downtown Rutherfordton but to also help drive conversation, partnerships and a framework to help promote the area's economic opportunities.
It was originally named the Economic Revitalization Program.
Today, it continues to help reap benefits for the local economy. As new businesses come and go, some have found their roots.
Others are just now finding theirs. Well Kneaded, a local bakery on North Main Street, is a recent success story. It's among several new businesses that have opened in 2026 with others set to open in late 2026 and early 2027.
