Salisbury passes transit property camping restrictions

SALISBURY — With increased complaints of people staying at Salisbury transit stops and the Salisbury Train Depot overnight, the City Council passed an ordinance that prohibits overnight camping in those areas.

City Attorney Graham Corriher presented the ordinance change that defines transit property and restricts camping and leaving personal property in those areas. The ordinance also sets out the penalties to be levied for infractions.

Transit property is defined as transit vehicles, shelters, benches and stops. It also specifically defines the Depot transfer station, Gateway parking lot, Gateway Park and Salisbury Depot, which are the areas along Depot Street from East Innes Street to East Kerr Street.

With the recent acquisition of the Salisbury Depot by the City of Salisbury, there have been an increase of Salisbury staff complaints about overnight camping in the transit areas.
