CULLOWHEE, N.C – In a game that was delayed due to lightning, the Samford soccer team opened Southern Conference play with a 2-1 win at Western Carolina on Sunday.
With the win, Samford improved its record to 4-2-3 overall and 1-0 in Southern Conference play. Western Carolina fell to 3-6-1 overall and 1-1 in league play.
The teams played the first 30 minutes in a scoreless tie when the contest was delayed for over two hours due to lightning. After the teams returned to action, Samford's Sam De Luca scored on a header off an assist from Annie McBride in the 39th minute to give Samford a 1-0 lead.
In the 75th minute McBride netted a goal off an assist from Caroline Smith for a 2-0 Samford lead. Western Carolina got on the scoreboard in the 83rd minute with a goal by Gabriela Vatrano off an assist from Samantha Whitaker.
For Samford in the win, De Luca and Mamie Carman shared the team lead with three shots each. Samford goalkeeper Peyton Hull had two saves in earning the win.
