Firefighting Operations at Elks Unocal Event Center
The Elks Unocal Event Center in Santa Maria has been converted into a comprehensive firefighting base to support nearly 3,000 personnel tackling the expansive Gifford fire located east of the city.
Fire Origin and Progress
Originating from multiple spot fires along Highway 166 northeast of Santa Maria on August 1, the blaze has quickly expanded, burning approximately 98,397 acres by Thursday afternoon. The wildfire continues to threaten nearby communities, with smoke and ash impacting the air quality. According to Cal Fire, containment stands at 15%, with 1,515 structures at risk but none yet destroyed.
Injuries and Response
Four firefighters and three civilians have sustained injuries amid efforts to control the fire.
"This fire expanded thousands of acres overnight during the initial days," stated Olivia Duba, a public information officer trainee with Santa Barbara County Fire. "Initially, the command camp was small, but it grew rapidly as the fire intensified."
