In December 2011, Shajia Ayobi orchestrated the murder of her husband, Ghulam Ayobi, a 53-year-old military consultant, by conspiring with an accomplice. The incident occurred while they were traveling in a van in Sacramento, California. Initially, Ayobi claimed that a carjacker had attacked their vehicle along Interstate 80, but investigators uncovered inconsistencies and found no supporting evidence for her story. Further investigations revealed that the incident was staged, leading authorities to suspect a conspiracy. Evidence linked Ayobi to her co-conspirator, Jake Clark, a former criminal justice student, who admitted in jail to being approached by Ayobi to assist in the murder. Forensic analysis found Clark's DNA on the weapon and related items. Both were tried separately; Ayobi was convicted of first-degree murder for her role in planning the killing and received a sentence of 26 years to life.
