TAOS COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – Two of the women previously convicted of a child's death at a northern New Mexico compound have filed a motion to be released from prison. An appeals court overturned kidnapping convictions for Hujrah Wahhaj and Sbhanah Wahhaj earlier this year .
The two women were serving life sentences linked to the death of a three-year-old boy at a militant compound near Taos in 2017. In reversing their convictions, the appeals court ruled the sisters cannot be retried in the case. Federal prosecutors are seeking another hearing on the matter, but are not opposing their release.
