VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) -- Each year, Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach opens its gates to welcome visitors for its much-anticipated air show.

But you'll also find passionate spectators off base.
"You can't beat it, you know," said spectator Denzel Caffee. "You see the plane following you…"
Caffee and his family are from Virginia Beach. For this year's air show, they decided to tailgate just across from the flight line, eating the food they brought and catching the action with a different vibe.
Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement "You know, come out here with a blanket, you know, put the kids on a car, let them watch it," he said. "You know, I think that's pretty cool. That's how I did it when I was growing up."
They definitely weren't alone as others decided to spread out, shelter in a bit of shade and even visit the ice cream truck, while still enjoying the sound of freedom.
