Last Saturday afternoon when the St. Mary’s Ryken High School football team against Washington Catholic Athletic Conference non-division rival Bishop McNamara, the Knights were hoping to attain their first win of the season against a formidable Mustangs’ foe, only to see the long journey to Prince George’s County end with a heartbreaking, 33-27 overtime setback.
St. Mary’s Ryken (0-4) has yet to win a game this fall, but the Knights have now suffered a pair of single-digit losses in each of their last two games, with last Saturday afternoon’s outing needed overtime to decide. One week after a tough 24-21 setback to Woodberry Forest at home, the Knights found themselves in a see-saw affair with the host Mustangs and eventually erased a 13-point second half deficit to force the overtime session.
“I have to say how proud I am of these guys for the effort again today,” said St. Mary’s Ryken football coach Gary Wynn, whose team will host Georgetown Prep on Friday. “We were down in the second half, but we fought back. They were just able to make a few more plays than we did in the overtime. It wasn’t the outcome that we wanted, but we’ll learn from this and continue to get better.”
