Fall officially starts Tuesday, but Long Island is getting a preview of what's to come Sunday with cool, wet conditions.
Rain is expected to fall on the region all day long, according to the National Weather Service forecast, with temperatures hovering in the mid-60s during the day. Flooding is not expected, but the rain will be a constant, David Stark, an NWS meteorologist, said in an interview.
About a half inch of rainfall is expected, Stark said.
"It shouldn't be anything too heavy; (it's) going to be more of steady rain," Stark said. "There's some indication it might start to taper off, maybe a drizzle or a sprinkle coming evening time, but pretty much for the day time hours, it's looking like it's going to rain."
The conditions are a product of a low-pressure system and a cold front moving in from the west, Stark said.
"Now that we're in the end of September, we're starting to see some cooler air masses start make their way down from the north," he said. "We're starting to see more of a clash of the warmer, lingering summer air to the south, and starting to get more of the cooler, fall-like air weather coming down from the north."
